Step 4

4. Designing and laying out your book!

Turn your book into a bestseller!

There is an old saying: "Don't judge a book by its cover", but most of us do just that! This is the same for a CD label, an e-book or the box of a board game.

The critical impact of good design

Strong design is critical to the initial impact a book or CD has on a purchaser. In the case of a book the quality of the interior design also adds considerably to how it is first judged. A poor choice of font or a jumbled layout will influence the decision to purchase.

The way you lay out the inside pages and design the cover, plus the quality of illustrations and photographs will be dictated by:

Decide whether you do the laying out and design yourself or whether you need to contract someone more skilled and, if so, what level of skills they will need. Your goals will determine how much time and money you spend on it. Don't miss the opportunity to shine!

Note: If you plan to create an ebook you need to make that decision early in the design process to minimise costs. Learn more about the ebook process from our handy Ebook FAQs download!

The investment is worth it

If your goal is for your book to be purchased then make sure it stands out amongst other books. You must be prepared to invest money into the cover design and the inside pages. Whilst the layout and design process may seem quite simple it is a specialised field and it is well worth the money to contract an expert to do the work.

From Yvonne Amery, author of Here at the Edge

This is a compact book in which I have selected 28 photos from my personal collection of the Manukau harbour to tune in with my poems and the stories that encapsulate my life.

Just as the book was going to print, my son Tyron drowned at Lake Pupuke in a diving accident and I have dedicated the book to him. Seeing the beautiful publication finally coming to fruition has been some consolation following the tragedy.

Thank you so much to everyone . my life is much richer knowing you all and feeling the real comradeship of everyone at PublishMe.

The cover design is so beautiful and special and is very like the ancient Chinese ink paintings which I love . the way the blue and black came together for me is so unique and special and goes so well with what I'm seeking to convey inside the covers. Thank you all for being part of my journey of life . the high and the low..
