A brief history — where did it all begin?
Educational publishing
In 1990 Graeme left teaching to set up an educational publishing business. This business, Curriculum Concepts, flourished and still publishes and distributes educational resources throughout New Zealand. As an early start-up business Graeme had to be creative — commercially printing large quantities of books meant cash flows were stretched and new resources couldn't be printed — so he began printing the resources he and other New Zealand teachers wrote. Before the days of digital technology Graeme printed stock from hard copy masters when the resources were needed. And so began our printing journey.
Moving into digital print
Once digital technology was available the business invested heavily in IT structure, networks and servers and also in the latest technology. Curriculum Concepts became a publisher with a high tech digital printing division called Zenith Print. Because we had the latest technology and capacity we looked for other partners. In 2001 we became the printer of choice for the Taranaki Polytechnic (Western Institute of Technology) and Practical Education Training Institute (PEI). For WITT we still print all student course notes in a range of formats and for PEI we print the course books for all distance students.
Over time, because we primarily specialise in printing books and resources, many people wanting to publish or produce a book or resource have used our expert services. As a result we began to build up a self-publishing customer base.
General publishing
In 2004 we developed a general publishing division, Zenith Publishing. We produced over 40 books over a three-year period and learnt a great deal about the general publishing market. There were many similarities and many differences to the educational publishing market. We sold into bookshops and libraries in New Zealand and attended the Frankfurt and London book fairs to sell international rights to the Zenith Publishing range. Despite being a small independent publisher we were successful and a significant number of our titles have been sold internationally.
The growth of self-publishing
With rapid changes in the book industry worldwide due to the impact of digital technology and the Internet — which we experienced first hand with our Zenith Publishing range — the self publishing sector flourished and opportunities abounded for self-publishers to have their voices heard in ways they would never have been able to before.
Self-publishing has certainly become a realistic substitute for traditional publishing as well as a more pleasurable and successful way for creative people to produce and sell their work. The best salespeople for a work are the creators, whether it is a book, article or CD. Self-publishing allows the creator to retain total control of their publication, from its look and feel to its marketing options.
Seizing the opportunity
We saw the opportunity to combine our expertise in publishing and digital book printing with this growing movement to self-publishing. The number of customers coming to Zenith Print to have their self -published book or their jubilee book or fundraising cook book printed had increased. To support this trend we developed the PublishMe concept and built the comprehensive PublishMe.co.nz so that self-publishers could go to a one stop, 'how to' website to find information. Our focus is to be the first place people come to when they want self-publishing support , when they want to print books, booklets and manuals and when they want to sell their book or resources online.
Huge growth and adding value
Since the launch of PublishMe.co.nz in 2007 the response has been huge and people join and visit the site daily. The number of self-publishers working with us every day continues to grow. Our aim is to teach you how to self-publish effectively enough to take advantage of this new wave and to assist you in the all-important area of marketing and selling once your works are complete.
We knew we had to continue to add value to those who were members of PublishMe and in 2008 we built a dedicated online bookstore for members to sell their work — PublishMeShop.co.nz.
Whilst PublishMe has a predominantly book and written word focus it is broadening out to encapsulate anyone who has work in other formats that they wish to self-publish and sell.
PublishMe Print & Publish
The team at PublishMe Print & Publish (PublishMe) work together to support you to achieve your goals, whether you want to print, produce or self-publish a book.
PublishMe Print & Publish is all about printing and self-publishing. Our print division is not just a facility for self-publishers however — we specialise in printing books, resources, booklets and informational texts of any sort for a wide range of clients. WITT and PEI have been customers now since 2001 — proof that we provide an excellent service.
So with digital technology advancing, and Internet and ebook capabilities growing, the world of digital print and self-publishing moves with it. Not only can Publishme Print & Publish now provide all the services required to enable on-demand printing of book material, we can also turn your self-publishing dream into a serious and viable option.
Why print digitally?
Digital print allows a self-publisher to economically print their book, CD, DVD, photograph etc in smaller quantities so as not to break the bank. For example instead of having to produce 1000 or 3000 copies of a book for it to become economical, a self-publisher can now request anywhere up to 500 copies without a problem. It's all about keeping it manageable. A first print run can be, say, 100 copies and small runs can be printed thereafter as required. This means no large outlay of cash and problems with storage of stock. Smaller print runs provide better opportunity to fix an overlooked spelling mistake or to update the content — something that authors who have 2000 books with slightly blighted content stored in their back room would have been very grateful for in the past!
