Credits:
John had a volume of poetry published in 2005 by Zenith Publishing Group:

It was positively reviewed in NZ’s Takahe magazine by Raewyn Alexander,
in Valley Micropress by Tony Chad and given a thorough pizzling by
Sam Smith of The Journal in the UK. John’s pathetically grateful for all of that.
He also has a web site where you can waste some time: www.cooldragon.co.nz
He has been published in a number of print and online magazines,
including Australian Reader, Wicked Karnival, Black Ink Horror, Illuminations,
Sam Smith’s Select Six, Whispers of Wickedness, Scifaiku, Stylus,
the NZ Poetry Society’s 2006 haiku anthology and NZ’s own Magazine.
And now he may be read in that truly amazing, splendiferous, astounding,
heroic online magazine Noneuclidean Café.

Rat atouille for the rindless” is a wild wily and hilarious ride. Follow Brian the rat through his many experiences and little life lessons. Full of laugh-out-loud moments and without a shred of political correctness to mar its slick hilarity. The world is knee-deep in the mess of its own making and Brian wades through the muck to come out the other side smelling like just what he is—a rat!
Cleverly written and illustrated, “Rat atouille” will surely be welcomed by anyone tiring of the same old, same old in all the ‘safe, let’s not step on anyone’s toes’ types of books of recent years.
John Irvine (the author) and Dave Freeman (the illustrator) are a dangerously funny and cynical duo indeed. Dave’s artwork perfectly punctuates the writing throughout, adding more insight and humor to every poem about the ratty escapades of Brian.
Every person exposed to the book will have a different reaction but each person will definitely HAVE a reaction. “Rat atouille” is a great book, full of fun and laughs, and I highly recommend it.

'Rat atouille for the rindless'
by John Irvine and Dave Freeman
A delightful literary ambiance flavours these poems, from outrageous literary allusions:
"All the world's a trap
And the people on it, merely rats -"
to a sprinkling of esoteric and foreign words words. As a Middle East negotiator our rat "knew his matzo from his muskau".
Intriguing titles lure us into many of these poems. Who could resist --
"Corporate success and its effect on a sensitive rodent"
or-
"Non gradus anus rodentum!"
or-
"Arak as a viable alternative to sodium pentathol?"
Brian's creator is a master of bathetic deflation. His rat enjoys "the deep thinkers like Joyce, Solzhenitsyn, Browning and Bush". Brian is a self-deluded poseur. He fancies himself as one of the lite rat i, and indeed he has all the cliched accoutrements of the type -
"He is given to
flamboyant paw gestures,
smoking Gauloises
in a jade cigarette holder
and wearing cravats"
but the pretentious grandeur of a Latin motto, "Non Gradus Anus Rodentum!" as a title deflates like a punctured balloon in translation: "Not worth a rat's arse!" The motto is indeed true of all Brian's literary pursuits, but it is certainly not true of John Irvine's in this slim volume. It is a cleverly-written and hugely entertaining book. The illustrator, Dave Freeman has exactly captured the mood of this Rabelaisian romp, summing it up perfectly in the back cover drawing of cheeky Brian pointing a bare bum at his critics.

"When picking up a book of humorous rat poems, illustrated with line drawings, the expectation is of something appropriate for children. However, one look at the dedication of this slim volume and any parent would hoot with laughter, blush, and hide the book quickly from little hands.
Every poem starts innocently enough with the opening line, "My pet rat Brian", and then hurtles on to its wince-making punning finale via politics, ornithology, music, bad haircuts, gambling, etc. As the Afterword points out, Brian was not always a rodent, but he was always a rat; a 'pretentious over-sexed alcoholic'.
This book is pure entertainment. I love it!"
