| Name: Robin Lee RobinsonBrief Biography: Robin pictured between Russ and Gina Garcia at their Kerikeri home March 2006, courtesty of local paper'
In the late 1970's, Robin. barely out of her teens, met and eventually married Read more...New Zealand's 'good keen man' the iconic Barry Crump. There were no children of the marriage."In Salting The Gravy", is Robin's self published account of those 12 years. After her former husbands death, the author, set about to debunk popular entrenched mythology surrounding Barry Crump, he was neither a womanizer, nor a husband prone to 'shoot through' What emerged was sader, and perhaps even more interesting than the the fictional portayal of the iconic 'good keen bloke'.
The first three years of her twelve year marriage were spent camping by bush, river and unihabited tropical island. Camping rough, with all their worldly possessions in a vintage Model A truck, Robin soon learnt how to cook and heat washing water over an open fire.
They trapped possum on the high ridges above their campsite, and later when the whitebaiting season started in Westlands Bruce Bay, they joined a small group who were cut off from the rest of civilization for the three month whitebaiting season. Later they mined for gold in a tributary of The Shotover river above Queenstown. The only way into their mountain camp when the road froze over in winter was via a mountain pass on horseback, just like miners in the gold rush era. Eventually Robin and Barry spent five months on an unihabited motu in the Cook Islands returning with a manuscript Barry had written.
Robin eventually helped Barry with the publishing of several of his books, and apart from a flat in Newmarket where the pair teemed up as announcer and panel operator to work at Radio Pacific, most of their living accomodation was in rough shacks, or camped in the back of a truck or combi van. Eventually they owned 11 acres of bush up the back of Opotiki across a river that could only be forded when conditions allowed. It was from here they frequently traveled to Wellington to film the Toyota advertisments.
After leaving the marriage, Robin moved to Tauranga with her five-month old daughter. That was 18 years ago.
She has been involved in a number of industries, including early childhood education, community and social work, resthome work, industrial work, caregiving and writing. She is currently working on a book with a 92 year old.
With the assistance of business partner and best friend Brad, Robin's book has largely sold out. The friends have learned a great deal about the joys and also the pitfalls of publishing since January of 2004 when 'In Salting The Gravy" was first released. Robin has relocated to a small Bay Of Plenty town so she can spend the winter writing and working on her next project. Read less... Website Link: None provided.
