PublishMe offers service providers

  • free access to a large self-publishing community whose members need help to achieve their goals
PublishMe offers service providers the opportunity to sell their skills to self-publishers as they work through the publishing and/or selling process. Currently this 'business card' service is free of charge.

Read here what some of our service providers say about Publish Me.

As a service provider you can set up a profile and offer services under the following categories:

Ghost writer
Editing – sub headings Editor, Proofreader, Indexer, Manuscript Assessor
Design – sub headings Illustrator, Photographer, Layout Designer
Marketing

You can set up a profile under one or more of the service provider tabs as long as you have the skills required to offer advice in that particular area. Service providers with a range of skills and expertise are welcome to put up a profile however your biography information should make it clear to the self-publisher what skills you have. The range of expertise required by self-publishers is wide and varied and your information should indicate clearly how you can help them.

For example – a self-publisher who is doing a family history may only want to spend a limited amount and only need a provider proficient in setting a basic Word document. Another self-publisher may want to produce a book to represent them at business seminars. They will require a professional designer who has design experience and can use a sophisticated publishing software package to ensure the layout and cover design are of high quality and represent the business in a professional manner

If a self-publisher asks you to complete work for them directly, please use good business practice and clearly identify to them what it is you are offering and at what price. Indicate to them what work may involve additional cost, what your responsibility is and what theirs is etc. It is very important that the service providers on the PublishMe site offer good services and build the reputation of the site for all service providers. In this way PublishMe can help you and you can help us.

If the self-publisher intends to print with PublishMe please check the specifications for laying out inside pages and covers on the MyPublishMe - Free Download tab under Design.

Q. What categories are there for sevice providers?
A. As a service provider you can set up a profile and offer services under the following categories:
Ghost writer
Editing – sub headings Editor, Proofreader, Indexer, Manuscript Assessor
Design – sub headings Illustrator, Photographer, Layout Designer
Marketing

Q. What info should I include in my profile?
A. Be specific where you can – many service providers have a specialist area of expertise eg: are you a cartoonist rather than a fine artist? Do you have technical/scientific editing skills? film script assessment skills? marketing/promotional skills etc. The more detailed your info, the more likely you are to get a good match with clients' needs. Please make sure to note your experience and qualifications, include a photograph and a link to your website or invite contact – make your bio content attractive – it's a great business card!

Q. What should I charge?
A. Look at websites where similar skills are being offered. Rates are dependent on your experience and the requirements for each job; you might want to make it clear in your bio that you are willing to negotiate a fee according to client requirements.

Illustrators/artists: A beginner illustrator might charge $20 for a single black and white line drawing whereas an experienced fine artist might charge up to several hundred dollars per artwork. Rates also depend on whether you are selling the art to the client or simply the right to use the art in a specific publication. Some artists charge on an hourly basis and that will vary depending on the job and the medium.

Editors/proofreaders: An hourly rate is the most common method of charging. Start at the lower end of the scale until you have gained experience and can work more efficiently and confidently. A proofreader might start at $20–$25 per hour; a copy editor $25–$35 per hour. An hourly fee for a structural editor would start around $40. Remember your fee covers expenses such as postage, phone calls etc. Quoting by page is not popular with clients (many pages could be perfect!), but many editors/proofreaders will negotiate a whole job price with their client – a ballpark total figure is more attractive to many clients than an hourly rate. Factors impacting on charges include the complexity of the job, the type of client, whether this is ongoing work and whether you are offering highly specialised skills that are not readily available eg: legal or technical editing/proofreading. By asking the client if they have a budget that you need to consider you can also judge whether you will consider the work. Whatever method you choose, asking your client enough questions will allow you to decide a price and we recommend you ask for a few pages so that you can assess more accurately how much work will be involved.
