Born in 1922, Bert was brought up in Freemans Bay, a poor working class area of Auckland City. Poverty and violence were part of his everyday life.
This is the story of how Bert survived the misery and deprivation of his childhood with the help of his close friend, Mick, sister Nora and the Catholic Church.
It describes the degradations he suffered at the hands of his embittered mother as he progressed into adulthood and struggled for independence.
Then with hope almost lost, Bert's life suddenly changed.

About this Author.
Kathy Badan was born in Auckland, New Zealand and has lived practically all of her life there. From a young age she was passionate about books, writing her first one at the age of twelve.
Kathy trained as a Registered Nurse in the 1970s.She had several years break to bring up her two children and during that time dabbled in other careers such as counselling and massage.She eventually returned to nursing and continues to work part time in this profession.In her spare time she enjoys yoga, tramping and travelling. Kathy also manages to find time to support her autistic daughter.
Kathy's lifelong ambition has been to publish a book. Her father's anecdotes about his childhood inspired her to write his memoirs.'Bread & Dripping' was published in April 2007.
