As with her four previous novels Bronwyn Tate explores landscape and the importance place has in the life of her characters. The Landing, a promontory surrounded on three sides by river and sea, was once home to colonial settlers. A group of students spend their summer holidays restoring its historic homestead. Claire and Norse, and Jo and Sam, what is it that pulls them back to The Landing? Evie is one of the new generation; her friendship with recent arrival Candy Wong comes at a time when turmoil disturbs the usual tranquility of her life. This is a novel filled with characters whose lives intercept against the background of a small community and the ebb and flow of the timeless water. The control Tate shows over her characters and her location gives the reader the sensation of having been on a long passage of discovery. There are secrets, young secrets and old secrets that are exposed only when the author thinks the reader is ready. This is Tate's final most multifaceted novel, and her skill is evident. The pity is we can have no more from her.
