About Self-publishing
As the information technology age continues to dominate the 21st Century, it affects all industries in some form. Book publishing is no different. A chain reaction sees publishers and booksellers equally finding it more difficult to maintain traditional trading patterns as Internet book sales and e-books become more and more popular. So, authors and writers find it more difficult to get their work accepted by publishing houses and seek other alternatives. And now, through the Internet and with the aid of 'early adopter' publishing companies such as Zenith Publishing Group Ltd, those opportunities are opening up.
Self-publishing is rapidly becoming a realistic substitute for traditional publishing as well as a more pleasurable and successful way for a writer to produce and sell his or her work. The best salesperson for a book is the author and self-publishing allows the author to hold onto total control of their publication, from its look and feel to its marketing options.
Digital print too, now allows a self-publisher to economically print their book in smaller quantities so as not to break the bank. Instead of having to produce 1000 or 3000 copies of a book for it to become economical, a self-publisher can now request anywhere from 20 copies to 500 without problem. A first print run can be, say, 100 copies and then small runs can then be printed thereafter as required. This prevents a large outlay of cash and problems with storage of stock. It also provides the ability to fix a spelling mistake that may have just been noticed without it affecting the entire several thousand copies that may be sitting in the garage.
So with digital technology advancing, Internet and e-book capabilities growing, the world of self-publishing moves with it. Publishme.co.nz can provide all the services required to enable the self-publishing dream to become a serious and viable option.
Why Self-publish?
To protect the integrity of the work
Self-publishing allows you to control the presentation of your book.
To make your voice heard
Many self-publishers have important things to say, but only a small and often widespread group to say them to. These books have been uneconomic to publish in the traditional way, but Internet marketing makes it viable.
To get the book to your target audience
You are better equipped to talk to a small focused market that publishers don't have time to learn how to approach. You probably understand that market better than any publisher does. The author is the best sales person.
To get the book out quickly
A publisher could take 12-18 months to produce a book. You can do it in half the time.
To reap the benefits of the sales
A publisher's share on sales is a high percentage of the retail price of a book, about 8-10% of which is usually paid out to the author in royalties. As the publisher of your book, you get to keep the publisher's share of the profits as well.
To control all rights
You assign rights when, to whom, for how long, and with the conditions you believe will appeal to publishers.
To retain control over promotion
Mainstream publishers usually spend no more than 3 months to promote a book. You can keep promotional campaigns going for as long as you wish.
To keep the book in print
After the first print run sells out, publishers often let the book go out of print. When you publish your book, you make the decision to reprint as often and for as many years as you like and with digital 'print on demand' services, restocking can be done with very little waiting time.
To ease the journey
It's easier to promote and sell a book to a customer than it is to sell the idea of a book to a busy, if not unimaginative, acquisitions editor at a big publishing company! They are not your target; they may not personally like the content.
