About this Author.

Now in his seventies, Dave Hayward was born and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand. He joined the army at the age of sixteen and at twenty was a corporal commanding a section of Infantry in Malaya during the ‘Emergency’. Although he insists this book is not autobiographical (“I was not that heroic”) it is based on that experience. Dave remained a soldier for thirty-three years and served his country in two more wars; Borneo and Vietnam. He finally retired as the Sergeant Major of the Army – the ultimate senior soldier appointment. His first-hand knowledge of the world of the Infantry soldier is recognised as unique. He is regularly invited to address students at the Military Studies Institute at Massey University. A widower with three supposedly mature children and six grandchildren, he now lives quietly in Feilding – when not off white-water rafting or on 4WD adventures in Australia that is.
