Quality Teaching and Learning shares the insights of the creative teachers that the author has worked alongside over the decades. Bruce believes that teaching is one of the most creative jobs in the world but only if teachers feel in control of their own destiny. Unfortunately this has not been the experience of teachers the past few decades. To regain a sense of control and to have more fun, there is a need for every school to clarify a ‘more informed vision’ of teaching and learning. The book provides guidance to develop such a vision. It is a vision that combines the best of traditional values such as rigor, discipline in depth learning with the ‘child centred’ values of creativity and choice; a ‘best of both worlds’ approach. The ideas covered in the book align well with the expressed vision of the New Zealand Curriculum which asks of schools to ensure all students leave ‘confi dent, connected, learners’ who are ‘active seekers, users and creators of knowledge’. Chapters in the book cover the importance of: a constructivist approach to learning; the importance of understanding the creative or inquiry process; integrated learning and talent development; teaching thinking; classroom management; and the importance of creating a stimulating room environment. As well there is a chapter providing guidance to school leaders to develop their schools as learning communities based on a shared vision and teaching beliefs. The ideas in book contribute to the realization of a personalized learning environment; one that values the ‘voice’, questions, ideas and creative expression of all students. Simply this is a book that celebrates the ‘artistry’ of the teacher and the need for students to ‘do fewer things well’ so as to achieve quality learning.
