About this title.
A young, enthusiastic Dorothy Ferguson taught in Tonga from 1927 to 1930. For much of that time she wrote detailed 'Letter Diaries', which she sent home each month by ship to her family in Palmerston North, New Zealand.
In her diaries Dorothy covers the whole cross-section of indigenous Tongan society, from Queen to commoners, as well as the papalangi. She writes about a period of Tongon history when education was seen as the way forward, but local traditions and culture remained strong and secure. Her experiences, not always easy for her, are told with a freshness and lack of prejudice which remains appealing.
